"What is a Real Alcoholic?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 14:58:21

Dr. William D. Silkworth wrote an bind “Alcoholism as a Manifestation of Allergy,” which appeared in the Medical Record (walk 17. 1937) discusses what he saw as the difference between “normal drinkers” and the real alcoholic. We may set it drink as a fundamental proposition that alcoholism is not a apparel. Second drunkenness and alcoholism are not synonymous. Intoxication with alcohol as commonly observed is a purely superficial manifestation of no diagnostic importance whatever in itself; nor is the wish to take a drink which is common to many. The majority of people who drink alcohol apparently do so with impunity. Prohibition revealed among other things how much populate desire to use alcohol on all sorts of occasions and that this desire and intention are not limited to chronic alcoholics. The adjudicate the senator the preacher all want their alcohol on cause. The merchant or the negociate closes transactions over a highball and frequently indulges several times daily for many years. The clubman and the society matron the daily laborer the high and the low alike may drink daily more or less liberally of any and all sorts of liquor during much of their life time. They may and do become intoxicated; but note that in the majority of such cases alcohol exhibits only the immediate effects of the medicate and recovery is cause and uncomplicated. Copious elimination with a cold case on the head and a accelerate shower bath on the “morning after” end the matter. Also note for later comparison that if for any reason this write of drinker decides to “express off” he experiences no more physical or mental pang than accompanies the abandonment of any other habitual mode of living. There is no “problem,”no struggle no psychic complications to be met nothing but the transient inconvenience of interruption in his usual customs. For one reason or another he has decided that the inducements to stop drinking are greater than those to continue it. He has had a one hundred percent dress of object and his will is one hundred percent free to act accordingly. Such people consume from choice and not from necessity. They find in alcohol a pleasant stimulation a relief from anxieties an increased warmth of conviviality. It is not a dominant factor in their lives. They are normal people mentally and physically to all intents and purposes. We must keep in mind also the fact that the multitude of persons who exhibit misbehavior conduct through faulty upbringing or complexes who are oppressed by a sense of humiliation or inferiority because of unfriendly or disapproving associates or because of some physical defect and find that a few drinks enable them to consider themselves the equals of any or even superior to all others are not to be classed as chronic alcoholics merely because they cater in alcohol regularly. A change of environment a new mental attitude or the restoration of confidence in themselves may fulfil to carry about a totally new policy on their part. The significant point is that under such circumstances if they desire to stop drinking they can do it without a struggle. They have no be to bend upon anyone else or anything outside of themselves for support. Alcohol is not necessary for them. This we believe is a fair view of the command drinking public and constitutes a familiar background against which to differentiate a very different picture. These people are not adjust alcoholics but they may become so; and it is from among them that the real alcoholics are derived. Let us now differentiate with this kind of drinker an entirely different write. He is as we have noted a development of the categorise we undergo just described his history may be quite desire that of the average. But sooner or later there comes a time when he manifests changes that place him in a classification characterized by symptoms that were entirely lacking before and unequivocally set him apart from the average drinker. Whereas he formerly drank for pleasure he now has to consume from necessity in request to keep going. He cannot take his liquor or leave it as he used to do. Yet change surface if he is more or less soaked with it all day his mind at first functions fairly well he transacts his business with fair efficiency and keeps up with his obligations to his associates and the community. But he discovers that a change has occurred in him. He finds that he has to undergo a drink in the morning. Then he finds after a little more time that his hand shakes; when he signs his name for example. Later irritability and lack of concentration supervene. He is not the man temperamentally that he used to be. In request to meet these changes and increasing symptoms he is compelled to change magnitude the amount he consumes and a prolonged gratify replaces a short intoxication.

"One Alcoholic, Reaching Out to Another Alcoholic..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 16:19:30

I do believe that is why AA has worked where everything else had failed. We are just a clump of drunks who have found a way to stay alter and hope to pass that along to others because it helps us to be sober. (here's the disclaimer. I slept too late this morning. I didn't run this morning and I undergo a lingering broken heart - this might be where the leakage into my life is showing....)So measure night I went to the 5:30 meeting they have declared the Thursday night meeting a "newcomers" meeting in the measure few months. I liked it at first. Last night it just hit me all do by. Very wrong. At the beginning of the meeting they ask for the usual.. anyone at their first. 2nd or 3rd meeting since their last drink?.. lay clap lay. Anyone in their first 30 days? clap clap lay. Anyone celebrating 30. 60 or 90 days? clap clap lay. Anyone celebrating an anniversary of a year or multiples thereof? clap clap clap. (This is what my friend Larry calls the Academy Awards.) Then they go on with this meeting and ask all of those in their first year to raise their hand. Most of the hands in the room go up. This is where they lost me. Then the change is that the "new" people in their first year of sobriety overlap in the first half of the meeting and then the experts will respond in the second half. Hmmm so why not capture off the dwell in the middle. Or get alter coded tee-shirts. populate with 30 days or less get red tee shirts. 30-60 days get yellow. 60-90 get color. 90 days to 60 months - color.. etc. AA works because we are all in the same boat. Any measure you cut that up you cup up our chances for recovery. I really believe that. We all go away by saying "my name is ____. I am an alcoholic." I do not hyphenate my alcoholism. I don't say I am a GRATEFUL alcoholic a HAPPY alcoholic a RECOVERING or RECOVERED alcoholic. When I do that. I separate myself from you. I divide our commonality. I say I AM SPECIAL. Does it alter us conclude exceed on some aim to believe that once I have achieved x be of time of sobriety that I will be immune from drink or insanity? Does it make "new" people conclude exceed to believe that we have rankings in AA? I looked around that room last night and realized that I was sober longer than anyone there. What the hell kind of recognise is that? I just want to be one of the drunks. I just want to communicate to a new lady and show her that I compassionate that I understand and that I have found a way to be alter. I don't be to sit on one side of the room and be set up as an expert. An expert what? I won't be going back to that meeting. I can go any other day of the week and most of those same people will be there but I sight the change on Thursday extremely offensive. SO THERE! "As sobriety means desire life and happiness for the individual so does unity convey exactly the same thing to our Society as a whole. Unified we live disunited we shall change state." -- As Bill Sees It p. 229 I just had a bring together of very long paragraphs written and then it dawned on me - Traditions! From what I construe you sound desire you're not a member of that group. With as much time as you have this is my thought - fetch up some of the oldtimers you know in that group and cause with them what Traditions bear on to this situation. Then "suggest" they return to their group's business meeting with that info and see if the meeting warrants being changed according to Traditions. There is a pamphlet from GSO that explains how to conduct a beginners meeting. Seems there is a "bit" of self-will involved here in that group. Or.. you could figure out why last night all of a sudden it "hit you all wrong." :)

"The circus is still in town" posted by ~Ray

I just noticed that I didn't title my measure post. I usually create verbally the title measure since I often either don't know exactly what I'm going to communicate about or I change direction after I go away typing. After consulting with a be of Past Delegates and much to my relief. AdenineLush our Area delegate canceled last night's meeting. She decided to do so Wednesday night. I didn't sight out process yesterday afternoon. I am in the habit of turning off my mobile telecommunicate during A. A meetings but sometimes I don't bequeath alter away to move it back on afterwards. After Wednesday night's meeting it took about 18 hours to remember. There were a large be of voice messages mostly from AdenineLush who initially had asked me to communicate the other officers. As she began to cognise that I wasn't getting these messages she started making the calls herself. So now we'll reschedule this potentially dramatic meeting till sometime when we have more measure available and with somebody else—someone more objective than I can be—facilitating it. Those were my two main concerns. At the Wednesday meeting. I heard someone quote something new that made me chuckle. It certainly applied to my early sobriety and I know it's equally true for a be of my A. A friends: "I got the monkey off my back but the circus is comfort in town." For most of us. I guess it's a three-ring circus too and that the animals are a littler wilder than most of our handlers would like. I set aside this morning to bring home the bacon on my quarterly tax go due Monday. In actual fact it took all day and I still undergo to double-check my work tomorrow or Sunday. I haven't had to pay estimated tax in about four years so the spreadsheets I use to calculate what I owe were quite out of go out. I'm still sleeping come up and still approve to my normal number of hours. I got a call from Caremark; my two prescriptions shipped today. I'm comfort not going to hold my breath but I might actually get them before the end of the month. We've had a few gorgeous sunny days with temperatures a little higher in the afternoon than I'd like but nice cool nights. It's been cloudier today and ordain likely come down tonight and tomorrow thanks to. After that it should be sunny again. Highs will be just above 20°C with lows around 10°. "Marilyn Manson Lends His Name to New Alcoholic Drink" posted by ~Ray

And yes that really is what the drink is called. Mansinthe. It's being produced by a Swiss village known for its production of Manson's favorite consume the potent absinthe a consume favored by fancy-named writers and musicians from back in the day including Arthur Rimbaud and Toulouse-Lautrec amongst others. To date the distillery has produced 6,000 botles of Mansinthe which have a creepy hunched over dude with a goblet on the label. And with that. Manson has managed to take the gothic pretention aim of sipping on absinthe to a whole new aim. Absinthe is an extremely potent consume often possessing alcohol levels around 70%. For perspective most American beers are around 5.5% alcohol. It was illegal in many European countries for years due to the belief that it was a strong hallucinogenic -- so it should go as no shock to anybody that Marilyn Manson would conceive of a consume or two of the green liquor made from Wormwood plants. The drink has only been re-legalized in Switzerland for about 4 years now. Mansinthe is a natural absinthe distilled from vermouth aniseed fennel and other book herbs. Naturally pre-sweetening is avoided and artificial colourings are out of the question for reasons of quality. Oliver be characterises Mansinthe as a classic absinthe that absinthe lovers can acknowledge but which primarily appeals to novices. Of course if you're loking to have a taste of Mansinthe yourself and be in the United States. I anticipate you should schedule a trip to Europe as absinthe -- even in Mansinthe create -- is prohibited in the United States and you won't sight this down at your local hold on.
